Choral Music Experience
Celebrating CME!
Twenty Years in Choral Music Education
1986-2006
CHORAL MUSIC EXPERIENCE teaching methods and musical materials were inspired and developed by Doreen Rao during her pioneering tenure with the Glen Ellyn Children’s Chorus, her acclaimed concert and recording preparations for the Chicago Symphony Chorus and Orchestra and her visionary work in founding and leading the first National Committee on Children’s Choirs for the (ACDA) American Choral Directors Association.
First published by Boosey & Hawkes Inc. in 1986! the CME choral teacher text books and the culturally diverse choral music series for children and youth choirs contributed side by side with Doreen Rao’s annual CME Institute for Choral Teacher Education, the first professional development course and certification program of its kind for emerging choral teachers in the United States and Canada.
Throughout North America, the United Kingdom and around the world, CHORAL MUSIC EXPERIENCE has provided young choirs and developing conductors with a set of clearly articulated principles and practices most closely associated with Doreen Rao’s “music performance approach to music teaching and learning in the choir.”
Distinguished from both the autocratic-technical approach to rehearsing and performing, and the conceptually oriented, musical elements approach to music education, CME methods and materials continue to emerge as a uniquely dynamic and distinctive performance approach to music teaching distinguished by an emphasis on the joyful, real-life and commonsensical rehearsal pedagogies practiced in the musical context for the artistic, educational and social benefit of children and youth.
Described as a brilliant artist and teacher…whose methods and materials could re-energize the art of singing, Doreen Rao’s CHORAL MUSIC EXPERIENCE continues to link the standards of professional performance with the goals of music education.
The New Millennium Festival
CME Institute for Choral Teacher Education
Doreen Rao, Ph.D., Founder-Director
Lee Kesselman, Associate Director
It is with great joy that we officially announce the newly integrated CME Institute for Choral Teacher Education with the New Millennium Festival Concerts. As an education through music performance initiative, both these programs developed from Doreen Rao's pioneering commitment to children and youth choirs around the world, and from her passion to empower the next generation of young singers and choral educators through innovative and inspirational choral music festivals.
The combined New Millennium Festival and CME Institute exists as an educational program that concerns both the professional development of choral teachers and the music education of children and youth through concert performance. We are pleased to announce that Mandy Miller is now serving as the newly appointed Executive Director with Festival and Institute support staff at work in England, Canada and the United States.
The NM Festival's comprehensive musicianship program for choristers offers a rich and interactive series of daily voice instruction, musicianship and movement classes, composer workshops, rehearsals and master classes with guest artists and faculty. The CME Institute's professional development program for conductors offers daily voice education, contemplative arts classes, score analysis, conducting technique, rehearsal pedagogy and conducting master classes with Doreen Rao.
Throughout the week, the NM Festival features evening concerts and lecture-demonstrations by participating choirs and faculty artists plus optional CME Institute workshops and choral reading sessions for all participants and guests. The merging of CME Institute for Choral Teacher Education with the New Millennium Festival gives both participating choristers and conductors the opportunity to grow independently and together in a talented community of singers, conductors and composers studying and performing together – As choristers and conductor participants have said many times over, CME is the week of a lifetime.
CME
Choral Music Experience began as “America’s first published choral music series for children and youth choirs.” Crafted by conductor Doreen Rao as a music education resource for concert performance, program planning and curriculum design, “CME” developed into a comprehensive choral music curriculum for school, church and community music education programs. Published by Boosey & Hawkes, the growing and innovative Choral Music Experience series have expanded into a versatile array of diverse choral classics, contemporary concert and world musics for youth, college, church and community choirs. Choral Music Experience repertoire is performed and enjoyed around the world.
